Lent is an opportunity to evaluate if Christ is really at the center of your own life and your relationship together as a couple. It is a dedicated time in the Church to more closely conform our hearts to Christ.
We encounter God in relationship, through the person of Jesus. Relationships form by spending time together, getting to know the other person, showing them that you love them in various ways, and the natural desire leads us re-orienting our lives in a way that includes the other person. This is easy to see as a couple when you first start dating. Are you doing those same steps with your relationship to Christ right now?
How do we do that during lent?
Lent is a time for prayer, fasting, and almsgiving.
The Catechism also describes lent as a time appropriate for “spiritual exercises, penitential liturgies, pilgrimages as signs of penance, voluntary self-denial such as fasting and almsgiving, and fraternal sharing (charitable and missionary works).” This opens up a lot of opportunities to go deeper in your relationship with Christ and your relationship as a couple during the Lenten season.
To help you narrow down the ideas, we put together 10 ideas for couples that will help you orient your lives towards Christ during Lent. While there may be other practices you do individually (eg. give up sweets), these are intended to be activities that you can do in addition together.
